This course aims to highlight contemporary approaches to soft tissue management around teeth, with each speaker presenting a focused topic—ranging from surgical design and material selection to the use of biologics—illustrated through diverse clinical scenarios. The session will explore how these modern techniques compare to, enhance, or challenge the long-standing gold standard of the connective tissue graft with coronally advanced flap. Designed to provoke critical thinking and comparison, the course will offer insights into the evolution of soft tissue therapy and guide clinicians in thoughtful technique selection.This course meets the Dental Board of California’s requirements for 2.0 units of continuing education.Educational Objectives
- Describe the biological rationale for the use of connective tissue grafts (CTGs) in root coverage procedures.
- Evaluate the biological rationale for incorporating biologic agents in root coverage procedures.
- Compare the biological rationale and clinical outcomes associated with biologics and soft-tissue replacement materials used for root coverage.
- Apply a clinical decision-making framework to determine why, when, and how biologics should be incorporated into root coverage procedures.
- Analyze the biological and clinical rationale for the use of autogenous grafts in bilaminar techniques.
- Evaluate the indications, surgical approaches, and patient- and site-specific factors that influence clinical outcomes.
- Critically assess the scientific evidence and clinical cases supporting the use of autogenous grafts as the gold standard compared with alternative soft-tissue grafting materials.
