Description

Be on the cutting edge of emerging advances in periodontics, including the influence of biological sex on immune responses and periodontitis, strategies for controlling inflammation, and the role of extracellular matrix biology in tissue health and regeneration. This course will also explore novel ECM-targeted therapies, probiotic-derived therapeutics, oral-systemic disease connections, and emerging research on the oral-gut-brain axis and human virome. Oral health is systemic health! This course meets the Dental Board of California’s requirements for 1.5 units of continuing education.

Educational Objectives

  • Describe how innate immune biology contributes to greater periodontitis severity in males compared with females
  • Explain how biological sex influences responses to immunotherapies aimed at preventing periodontitis.
  • Understand the natural pathways that regulate inflammation and how these mechanisms can be leveraged to control excessive inflammation in disease.
  • Evaluate how pharmacologic modulation of inflammation without inhibiting its essential functions may influence clinical procedures and treatment outcomes.
  • Describe the role of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and its biomodification in connective tissue health, disease progression, and regeneration.
  • Identify emerging multimodal ECM based or ECM targeted therapeutic strategies with potential applications in periodontics.
  • Explain the interconnection between oral health and systemic health using evidence from both human and animal studies.
  • Describe how specific probiotic derived antimicrobial and anti inflammatory molecules such as nisins may mitigate periodontal disease and related systemic conditions including NAFLD, gastrointestinal inflammation or dysbiosis, and Alzheimer's like neuroinflammation.
  • Discuss emerging insights from NIH funded Human Virome Characterization Center research on the oral gut brain axis across the lifespan.
